About Indian Railways

Railways of India is the largest employer in the the country. Railways in India is established in the year 1853, owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways. It is one of the largest railway networks in the world because their track extends 1,19,630 km long in the route of 65,000 km and 7,500 stations. Railways in India has been divided into 17 zones and are managed by Railway Recruitment Board. Railway is considered as one of the largest government sectors in India. So, there are lakhs of people working under railway sector from various zones in different post that ranges from lower to higher grade level. Railway jobs provide great opportunities for candidates who have finished their 8th, 10th, 12th, Diploma, ITI, Graduation, Engineering, MBA, and other Postgraduate degrees. 

Indian Railways & Its Departments

For each and every Railway Zones in India, there is head called General Manager (GM). Each of the Railway divisions is headed by a Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), who can be appointed from any services of IRTS, IRAS, IES, IRPS etc. There are Divisional officers who heads various departments viz. engineering, mechanical, electrical, signal and telecommunication, accounts, personnel, operating, commercial, safety, medical, security branches.

Railway Staff are classified into gazetted (Group ‘A’ and ‘B’) and non-gazetted (Group ‘C’ and ‘D’) employees. The Group ‘A’gazetted employees recruitment is carried out by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) through All-India Level Competitive Exams conducted by it. The Group ‘B’ recruitment for various posts like Section Officers, Junior Engineers, Depot Material Superintendent posts is conducted by Railway Recruitment Board. The Group ‘C’ and ‘D’ employees are recruited through 21 Railway Recruitment Boards.

Railways recruits for lower level positions like ASM (Assistant Station Master), Goods Guard, Clerk, TA (Traffic Apprentice) , CA (Commercial Apprentice), JE, Junior Accounts Assistant, Staff Nurse, Ticket Collectors and Group D posts like Gunman staff, Safaiwala, Trackman, Peon, Tracker, etc. through Railway Recruitment Board Non-Technical Examination.
